Week 20: Winter Is Nearly Here

Micah dressed in cute warm clothes!
This week, the weather has been pretty cold! I've had to put socks on while I'm in the house, and the gas heater was on for the very first time this year yesterday. It was cold and wet and miserable yesterday, that we had to postpone Mums Group at my place because we didn't want to get babies wet and risk getting a cold. So, we agreed it was a day to stay in and keep warm.

We also had a couple of hail storms in the past week alone, it looked like it was snowing! I'm so glad I don't have to go to work... I would imagine going to work would be a struggle in weather such as this! I even found it a struggle to go out and do grocery shopping, so good old Coles Online saved the day. I feel sorry for the Coles Delivery Man though! The show must go on and even in that horrid weather he soldiered on in his rain jacket and hoodie and delivered my groceries straight to my front door.

I hope the weather improves the next few days, as we have a couple of things scheduled. Today is ANZAC Day Public Holiday so hubby is home. We are off to see The Avengers movie at 3.30pm so we've organised a babysitter to drop Micah off at. Really look forward to 2 solid hours of being baby free :-) I'm going to lunch at a friend's tomorrow who has a 7-week old baby (my sister in law is going too with her 3yo and 1yo). Then on Friday, I have two friends coming over for lunch and they each have a baby. Micah loves baby company and playdates!

Then on Saturday we have a Baby Shower at lunchtime followed by dinner and karaoke in the evening. Micah's coming with us all day Saturday so I hope he'll be okay! It's hard to get him to sleep properly when he's not at home and if he doesn't sleep he gets all grumpy so fingers crossed he'll be able to get some good sleeps in his pram while we're out and about.

And finally, just a couple of videos I took this week whilst entertaining myself at home with Micah:

VIDEO: Commando Crawling at 19 Weeks

This week, Micah has been doing a lot of commando crawling. He uses his foot and knee to move inch by inch to get to where he wants to go. He's only using his left foot and knee at the moment, but it does the job! I always leave him in the middle of his playmat so he can roll over and decide for himself where he wants to go. I find the green truck is his favorite "target" and he eventually tries to eat it. But then again, these days he puts everything in his mouth!

Week 19: Belated 4 Month Review

Micah's original 4-month review Maternal and Child Health appointment was cancelled due to the nurse being away sick. So, we had to reschedule at a health centre that's a bit further away from the one we usually go to and the review has been delayed by a few weeks.

The nurse at this other place was so lovely, I've decided I would come back to this one for his 6-month review! Usually they don't do 6-month reviews, but since I plan to start his solids at 6 months the nurse thought it would be a good idea to scehdule an appointment just to discuss that.

Micah completely wowed the nurse and had glowing reviews everywhere. We are so pleased with his development and everything is well on track. He is rolling over and back, and even doing some commando crawling on the playmat! Using his feet and knees to move inch and inch on the playmat until he reaches a toy he wants to grab and put in his mouth! Just today I caught him rolling over and back several times to reach a truck, and then he moved the truck along with his hands while on his tummy! Such a clever boy :)

His growth is still beyond the 97th percentile, although his weight gain has slowed significantly compared to his 8-weeks review but that's because he is moving around a lot more and getting some exercise! On a weekly basis, he is still gaining a bit more than the average weight gain.

So proud of you, my little man. Keep up the good work!!

Week 18: Play Area Extended & Some Photos

As a continuation from Week 17's post, I went and purchased the brand new ABC playmat set from eBay after seeing how good it looked and how well it works e.g. it was easy to clean and I was happy with the thickness of the playmat to cushion the hard tiled floors. The playmat finally arrived today and I got to extend Micah's play area! He has so much room to play now! Too bad he doesn't know how to use the space yet but he will get there and he will love it!

Not much to write about this week really. Micah's sleeping better this week. I went out to lunch with Mums Group today. I'm going to Leah's baby shower this weekend so Micah will get to spend some time with his dad while I'm at the shower. I really need to get back to my diet (been eating too much junk the past week and gained 3kg! I blame Easter...) and need to get back to walking again. And I took some new photos of Micah which turned out really good.

Baby's First Easter

Micah trying to eat an Easter Bunny chocolate
What a great Easter long weekend we've just had. It was a mix of just enough relaxing, just enough socializing, just enough family time, and just enough cleaning and tidying. It started on Friday, although we had another rough night with Micah not sleeping exceptionally well, we still made it to church for Good Friday service. I was quite grumpy and a bit sensitive and easily triggered to cry over everything, but I was fine in the end. Of course, we then set up the new play area the rest of Friday, and had some friends over for Fish N Chips and to watch a movie.

On Saturday, I went to Baby Bunting with my little man and spent over an hour just looking at things (Micah got bored and fell asleep in his pram) so I took my time! I was there picking up gifts for my friend who's having a baby shower the following weekend. I also picked up a few gifts for Micah! Bought a cup holder attachment for the pram, a new set of pyjama onesie, some baby wipes and another set of ABC playmat to extend the existing one. Unfortunately, the new set does not fit with the old, so I had to take it back. I bought an activity rug instead for the mean time. Will order the exact same ABC playmat from eBay and patiently wait for it to arrive!

I even got a chance to quickly do grocery shopping while I left Micah to be babysat by hubby and his mate Tony who stayed over at our place Friday night. Hubby even got the chance to go out and buy a new whipper snipper and he's loving it. Spent over $500 on it including all the add-ons but apparently money well spent because it makes cutting grass a lot more enjoyable! Hey, I can't complain if my husband now enjoys cutting grass... :p

Then, we went to the 6pm Family Easter service at our church followed by dinner at a restaurant with my sister in law's family and another couple friends. It was good to at least not have to worry about cooking dinner two nights in a row, but Mr Micah was soooo grumpy at the restaurant!

Dribble dribble dribble...
Then on Sunday, we drove to Werribee for our Family Easter Day. We packed Micah's portacot and everything so we can put him to sleep while we enjoy spending time with family and eating lunch, etc. We had our Easter egg hunts, and played some games, and even went for a walk and stayed for dinner. It was a good day and we got home early enough to put Micah to bed at a decent hour.

Today, the weather was cold and wet. It rained most of the day so hubby could not get any decking work done. Thankfully, I managed to get him to help me tidy up our wardrobe. It was in such a huge mess we couldn't see ANY floor in our walk in wardrobe because it was covered with clothes, nappy boxes, laundry basket, toilet paper rolls and so much junk! It was in such a bad state all our clean clothes freshly washed were still sitting on our pool table.

So I got out some rubbish bags and started labelling them "Maternity", "Summer" and "Salvos". By the end of this exercise, we have one big bag of maternity clothes ready to be stored away, one bag of Summer clothes going into hiding, and 3 bags of Salvos going to be donated.. clothes which we will never ever wear again. Felt good to get rid of things we no longer need. Felt good to have our walk in wardrobe tidy and functional again. Felt good to finally move all those clothes sitting on our pool table to where they belong! We also organised all our chest of drawers so we finally have all our socks, underwear, T-shirts and shorts neatly folded into drawers where they belong! Aaaaahhhh.. so very satisfying. Took ALL DAY but it was SO worth it!

Finished the day with Nasi Lemak for dinner. And now this blog post. Now I'm off to watch some TV and cuddle with my husband. Hope you had a great Easter!

Week 17: New Play Area, Sleeping & Solids

We've finally cleared out some old furniture in our family room to make room for Micah's new play area. I bought the alphabet mat from eBay for just $15 (and I am hoping to buy more so we can cover more floor space!) and our friends have kindly given us their old couch which is still quite sturdy and just the right size to go in this new area. Now Micah will be able to roll around as much as he wants once I get more alphabet mats there will be even more room to play!

Little man looks happy: "Thank you mummy and daddy!"
The best thing about this new play area is that we (adults) get our formal lounge room back! No more toys and colourful things hanging around. I get to keep that area tidy at all times in case visitors pop in unannounced - and won't have to stress or worry about the house being a mess.

Speaking of stress, Micah has been quite a bad night sleeper lately. The past couple of nights have been pretty rough. He usually sleeps 6 hours and then 4 hours so I only had to get up once or max twice during the night. This past week, he's been getting up every 2-3 hours and as it gets closer to sunrise he would wake up every HOUR! So frustrating... I know this is just a phase and "this too shall pass" but it is hard to function when you've not had enough sleep.

Because of recent sleep problems, I've also been feeling pressure by people to consider starting solids. Micah is only 4 months old, and yes he seems hungry all the time and wants more food (so I just have to feed him more and put up with it, that's fine). I really want to breastfeed exclusively for 6 months and wait until he's 6 months to start feeding him solids. I also want him to start solids the "Baby Led Weaning" way which I thought seems like a really cool method to start.

Every baby is different and I know so many people tell me their babies start eating solids and supplementary foods from a very early age and I respect every other mother's decision. But I personally would rather wait. Here are some articles for all the reasons why I choose to wait:

  2. Babies Who Start Solids Too Early More Likely To Be Obese

To all mothers out there who might not agree with my decision, I don't mean to offend you if you think differently or do things differently. After all, we are all different and our babies are different so we are all entitled to do whatever we feel is best for our children :)
